Do you have leather that is too thick?

Do you need your leather more even and at a consistent thickness?

We have industrial leather splitters that can precisely split down your leather to the thickness you need for your project. We accept customer provided leather or can split the leather we sell. Our splitter has a width of 32" but we prefer to trim the leather to about 28" wide to ensure it feeds nicely. If your hides are wider than 28" you can trim them down prior to shipping or we can do that here.

Everything you need to know about our leather splitting service.

What are the benefits of splitting leather?
  • Splitting to thinner size gives you right thickness for your application.
  • Reduces weight from your project.
  • Remove variation in tannery split hides to an even thickness.
  • Ability to split to 0.4mm (We recommend not going under 0.5mm in most cases).
  • Removing hair on flesh sides uses less glue.
  • Removing hair on flesh also makes for cleaner adhesion with stiffeners and liners

While we try our best to split leather to the requested thickness, please know that there is a +/- 0.3mm tolerance on full hides and a +/- 0.2mm tolerance on panels being split. On rare occasions, leather can split outside the tolerances. There is also the possibility of holes, areas that are thinner or thicker or other issues occurring during splitting. These are risks we ask the customer to bear due to the nature of splitting leathers we haven’t split before.

We do not split hair on hide or any leather that would shed foreign objects into our splitter (glitter, beads, etc.) We reserve the right to review the leather and deem it appropriate to split or not. Some exotic leathers may incur an extra charge due to the amount of care needed.

Please email us your tracking number so we can watch for the leather to arrive.

What happens when we receive your leather?

Once we receive the leather we will measure it and email you an invoice with the splitting charges and for return shipping and handling. (Even if you are combining your personal leather with items purchased from our store, you will be charged an additional shipping and handling fee.)

Once the invoice is paid, we will split your leather and send it back out to you.

What do I need to include with my leather?

You need to include a note with your package letting us know the thickness you want the leather split to. We split in ranges: 0.4-0.6mm, 0.6-0.8mm, 0.8-1.0mm etc.

If the leather needs to be cut to clear our splitter, please include a diagram of how you want it cut. We have a 27" width limit on the splitter. Depending on the leather, we can go right to the 28" but on some leathers we may have to cut it smaller. We will contact you if that is the case. The leather can be any length.

What is the turnaround time?

It takes about 1-2 weeks from the time we receive the leather to invoice you, split the leather and send it back out to you.

If you need your leather sooner, there will be a 25% surcharge (or minimum $25).

How much does it cost to split leather?

We can split leather you purchase from our shop or from your own.

Customer provided leather:

  • 1–25 sqft: $2.75 per sqft
  • 26–50 sqft: $2.50 per sqft
  • 51–100 sqft: $2.25 per sqft
  • 100–200 sqft: $2.00 per sqft
  • 200+ sqft: $1.85 per sqft
