"I love the unique texture. I got it thinned as much as possible and it still is a hardy feel. Great for bigger bibles. The customer service is outstanding and Rocky Mountain leather will be my go to for the rest of the Bible’s I rebind." - David L.
This premium full-grain French chèvre goatskin is tanned in France by the renowned tannery Alran S.A.S., which has produced luxury-grade goat leathers for over a century. Crafted on a vegetable-tanned crust and finished in full aniline, this hide retains its natural rich colour and grain with no extra surface coating to obscure it. The light grain and medium firmness make it beautifully tactile, yet durable enough for serious artisan work. Ideal for small leather goods, bookbinding and restoration, it takes gold foil effortlessly and will develop an attractive patina over time.
Leather splitting is a custom service available down to your preferred thickness
Please note split leather can't be returned
There is a tolerance to leather splitting. While we have invested a lot of time and training into hitting a tighter tolerance range than advertised, sometimes the leather articles and differing densities require the full tolerance range.
Leather tolerance is denoted by +/- which means the leather can be both above and below that number by the denoted amount.
How we gauge the leather is with a thickness gauge that can reach both the edges and middle of the hide. We apply a moderate amount of pressure (Not too hard and not too soft)
Again our tolerances are tighter than the tanneries. We are usually well inside the range, especially on panels, but occasionally need the full range. Tolerance ranges are as follows:
Splitting Panels: +/- (0.1mm).
Splitting Full Hides & Half Hides: +/- 0.15mm
No Splitting (From Tannery Splitter): +/- 0.2mm
Discount: Mix and match any Alran articles to get the volume discount above!

Chevre Chagrin "Liege Main" Goat Leather comes from the Alran Tannery in France. The Alran tannery has been producing some of the finest goat leather for luxury brands for over 100 years. They are well known for their premium goat leather and the beautiful colors they are able to produce.
This goat leather is their top grade. The leather is tanned in a full veg-tanned crust and then retanned and dyed with some mineral tannage to add softness and strength at thinner thicknesses. The tanning process involves a unique 23 step process that takes over 4 weeks to produce each hide. This special process involves a lot of hands and working the leather to give it the beautiful grain, soft supple feel and an even color. The grain has a natural texture that adds beautiful depth to the leather. It is easy to cut and skive.
The difference between the Sully and the Ligee Main is the finish, the sully is a pigmented finish that is very clean and even. The Liege Main is a full aniline finish that brings in the beautiful variation of the leather.
**The Liege Main will show more natural variation in the lighter colors. If you want very clean leather we recommend you purchase the Sully. If you like a rustic type look with beautiful variation the Liege Main is a great fit.

80%+ With a natural product like leather, there can be areas with neck and back wrinkles, veins, scars, bites, loose grain, but in general this article can expect an overall high cutting area. Sides do include bellies where there can be some loose grain. This leather being semi aniline (meaning the leather is very mostly natural with some slight finishing) the leather will have most areas of concern covered improving yield. Darker colors will also better hide any areas of concern. A key skill of using full aniline leather is the ability to work less desirable areas of the hide into the less visible areas of your projects. Overall this article has a high cutting yield. |
