Odessa is the real deal! Been using it for a few years now on our duffle bags and hand bags. The finished product is a matte pebbling look that is so natural and bullet proof. Thank you RM for carrying this!! - Jason B.
"Odessa", also known as Togo, is a naturally shrunken calf leather that develops its deep grain through the tanning process — not embossing. The hides shrink up to 40%, creating a unique texture with signature veining down the back. This full grain leather has a medium-firm temper, balancing structure with softness, and offers excellent scratch resistance. Often used by top luxury brands, Odessa is prized for its durability and unmistakable luxury character.
Leather splitting is a custom service available down to your preferred thickness
Please note split leather can't be returned
There is a tolerance to leather splitting. While we have invested a lot of time and training into hitting a tighter tolerance range than advertised, sometimes the leather articles and differing densities require the full tolerance range.
Leather tolerance is denoted by +/- which means the leather can be both above and below that number by the denoted amount.
How we gauge the leather is with a thickness gauge that can reach both the edges and middle of the hide. We apply a moderate amount of pressure (Not too hard and not too soft)
Again our tolerances are tighter than the tanneries. We are usually well inside the range, especially on panels, but occasionally need the full range. Tolerance ranges are as follows:
Splitting Panels: +/- (0.1mm).
Splitting Full Hides & Half Hides: +/- 0.15mm
No Splitting (From Tannery Splitter): +/- 0.2mm
Luxury shrunken calf with unmatched natural grain
Weinheimer “Odessa” Togo, born in the alpine regions of Europe, stands as one of the most coveted leathers in the luxury world. Naturally shrunken — never embossed — each hide reveals a rich, deep grain with signature veining that cannot be imitated. Balancing structure with supple softness, Odessa offers unrivaled scratch resistance, timeless beauty, and the durability to withstand everyday wear while elevating your craft to true luxury.
Established in 1849, Weinheimer Leder is a pioneer and one of the oldest tanners of calfskin. Weinheimer leather articles are used by the top luxury brands on some of the highest end handbags. They are masters of the most difficult leathers to produce!
Odessa (Togo) is arguably the top calf leather amongst the luxury brands. Togo is notoriously difficult to produce and achieve its deep naturally shrunken grain (No embossing).
The hides come from calf in the alp regions of Europe where there are less bugs and are hand selected for the highest quality. These hides are sourced specifically for their density, ensuring a distinct deep grain in the shrinking process. One hide can lose up to 40% of its size in the shrunken tanning process. The final result is one of the highest end luxury leather articles available. A deep grain that can not be imitated. Running down the center of the back, Odessa will highlight its signature perpendicular veining. This veining will usually be centered on the highest end luxury handbags.
This leather is full grain and top grade. It is a nice balance of medium and firm temper, providing structure, yet is slightly softer than Negonda. This particular leather is popular for highest end bags, clutches and larger items. Another unique trait of this leather is its durability and scratch resistance making it a great choice for products needing unmatched durability for everyday wear and tear. It is a versatile leather that will give a great dimension and a luxury feel to your products!

75%+ With a natural product like leather, there can be areas with neck and back wrinkles, veins, scars, bites, loose grain, but in general this article can expect an overall high cutting area. Whole hides and sides do include bellies where there can be some loose grain. This leather being full aniline (meaning the leather is very natural with no extra finishing on the surface to hide any flaws) darker colors will better hide any areas of concern. A key skill of using full aniline leather is the ability to work less desirable areas of the hide into the less visible areas of your projects. Overall this leather has a moderately high cutting yield. |
