DS-062 The Breakwater Bag Digital Pattern

This is a PDF pattern to create a leather bag - The Breakwater Bag - and a complimentary cardholder. The Breakwater Bag pattern is a no-gussets bag that is designed to be essentials-only, going-out or formal events bag. It can be carried with a purse chain on-shoulder or cross-body or hand-held by itself as a clutch if you remove the purse chain. The bag has 4 compartments – a phone compartment between the Closure and the Back of the bag, a card slot between the two Bases and a couple of big main compartments for other essentials. The layered design allows for creative two-tone or monochrome leather and thread combinations. As the space between the two ‘horns’ of the Closure Back piece is quite big and I always strive to avoid leather waste, I have included a complimentary card holder pattern that utilizes that piece of leather almost completely. No leather is wasted, and it can be sold together with the bag as a gift set. Have fun making The Breakwater Bag! :)

THE BREAKWATER BAG
=====
Bag dimensions: 24/16cm (9.5/6.3inches)
Complimentary cardholder: 10.6/6.4cm (4.2/2.5inches)

Skill level: Advanced

Leather: > 1.6-1.8mm thickness (4-4.5 oz), must be soft temper
> You will need about 2.5 sq. feet of leather.
Max leather panel width needed is 24cm (~10inches)

> 2.2-2.4mm thickness (5.5-6oz) for the strap if you will be making one instead of using a chain
> The strap is 20mm (4/5inches) wide and you need two pieces – one 48cm (~19in) long and one 90cm (~35in) long.

Pattern specific tools/materials:
> 3mm and 5mm hole punches
> 2x Chicago Screws, 1.5cm (5/8inch) post length
> 1 snap button for the bag closure - up to 15mm diameter (12.5mm recommended)
> 1 more snap button if you will be making the complimentary cardholder.


> Strap Option A – a purse chain: 80 to 120cm. The Bag can be carried without any strap as a clutch, on-shoulder with shorter purse chain and as cross-body with longer chain hence the range given. Those are available in many variations online when searching for a “purse chain”. They usually come with swivel clasp buckles already attached to them. The Breakwater Bag is specifically designed to be carried with a purse chain, however I have included also a leather strap option in the pattern files.
> Strap Option B: 1 x 20mm whole belt buckle, 2 x 20mm swivel clasp buckles and a 4mm hole punch.

Basic Instructions
> Print pattern at 100% and verify size using the Print Accuracy Test. Measure and cut on the outside edge of the lines.
> Stitching holes in the pattern are 4mm from the edge and spaced at 3.85mm, however illustrative in nature. You can use other spacing based on your pricking irons/stitching chisels.
> Please read through the Assembly Instructions file before commencing the build.
