This is a PDF leather pattern to create the Mermaid cross body bag. The Mermaid bag is the Frigate Bag baby sister. More compact in size, it introduces a couple of new things to the design and the build: a leather twist closure and piping that gets tucked in on both ends of its stitch line.

The Mermaid is designed for everyday carry and will hold all daily essentials. The opportunities for 2 or even 3 colors combinations are vast especially when the bag is made with the twist closure. For those wanting to skip the twist closure, the download also includes some patterns for the closure flap and front panel that will allow you to use other types of closures - magnets, snap buttons, LOXX type closure etc. Note that there are no specific assembly instructions for such other closures included. I just thought those blank slate patterns will be helpful if one wants to venture into such closure types.

Two adjustable strap patterns are included as well - classic buckle-based one and one using a couple of stud buttons as means to adjust the strap length.

THE MERMAID BAG

=====

Bag dimensions: 21/15/6.5 cm ~ 8.3/5.9/2.5 inches

Skill level: Advanced (skiving and precision cutting skills required)

> Measure and cut on the outside edge of the lines.

> Stitching holes in the pattern are spaced at 4mm, however due to curves and irregular shapes might differ slightly at some spots.

> Please read through the Assembly Instructions files in full before commencing the build.

Pattern specific tools:

> Bag: 5mm & 15mm hole punches.

> Straps: 1mm, 3mm, 4mm and 5mm hole punches (see the strap patterns for details)

Leather & Hardware

> For the main body of the bag: 2-2.2mm thick (5-5.5oz), medium temper leather. You will need a bit under 2 sqf of leather excluding the strap. The longest piece is ~45cm; the widest piece is ~23cm. All of those pieces will fit in a 52/33cm panel.

> For the piping & closure flap lining you will need 0.5-0.8mm thick medium to soft temper leather approximately 3cm wide and 45cm long . Also required is ~38.5cm long and 2 or 3 mm thick round leather cord or alternatively paracord or plastic foam piping of the same size and thickness.

Note: you can go up to 1mm thickness for the piping leather just make sure it is soft and that you use 2mm leather cord instead of 3mm one.

All the lining/piping leather will come up to ~0.65 sq feet of leather and will fit onto a 45/13cm panel. The longest piece is ~45cm, the widest one is ~9cm.

> Leather for the strap: 2.0-2.2mm thickness (5-5.5oz). The strap is 20mm wide and you need two pieces – one 48cm (~19in) long and one 90cm (~35in) long. You can use the same leather as for the main body of the bag.

Button Studs Strap

> Hardware: 2 x 20mm swivel clasp buckles, 2 x 20mm D-rings, 2 x button studs (7mm or 8mm cap diameter)

Whole Belt Buckle Strap

> Hardware for the strap: 2 x 20mm swivel clasp buckles, 2 x 20mm D-rings, 1 x 20mm whole belt buckle (also known as center bar buckle).

> Hardware for the Twister Closure: 1 x Chicago Screw with post length 10mm and post width 5mm
