Merino shearling is a specific type of lamb (young sheep) (often from the Merino sheep breed) that has been tanned with the wool left intact, and often trimmed/sheared to a controlled length, giving a refined surface. The leather (suede or nappa finish) lies on one side, with the wool fleece forming the hair-on side. Historically, shearling has been prized for its insulation, durability, and luxe appearance—used for outerwear by high-end fashion houses and in cold-weather specialties. In the context of Merino shearling, the wool tends to be finer, denser and more uniform than many standard sheep skins—which translates to a plush surface, consistent fleece depth, and a more premium hand and appearance. Suppliers refer to short-wool Merino shearling hides sheared to around 8–10 mm length for high end applications.

75%+ With a natural product like leather, there can be areas with neck and back wrinkles, veins, scars, bites, loose grain, but in general this article can expect an overall high cutting area. Whole hides and sides do include bellies where there can be some loose grain. This leather being full aniline (meaning the leather is very natural with no extra finishing on the surface to hide any flaws) darker colors will better hide any areas of concern. A key skill of using full aniline leather is the ability to work less desirable areas of the hide into the less visible areas of your projects. Overall this leather has a moderately high cutting yield. |
