PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Merino shearling is a specific type of lamb (young sheep) (often from the Merino sheep breed) that has been tanned with the wool left intact, and often trimmed/sheared to a controlled length, giving a refined surface. The leather (suede or nappa finish) lies on one side, with the wool fleece forming the hair-on side. Historically, shearling has been prized for its insulation, durability, and luxe appearance—used for outerwear by high-end fashion houses and in cold-weather specialties. In the context of Merino shearling, the wool tends to be finer, denser and more uniform than many standard sheep skins—which translates to a plush surface, consistent fleece depth, and a more premium hand and appearance. Suppliers refer to short-wool Merino shearling hides sheared to around 8–10 mm length for high end applications.

From a technical standpoint, Merino shearling hides offer

  • Dual-surface functionality: The fleece side provides thermal insulation, loft, and texture; the leather side provides structure, stability and can be finished (suede, nappa, dyed) for design flexibility.
  • Premium aesthetics and tactile feel: The wool-on side is soft, dense and visually rich. The leather side allows artisans to treat, dye and finish the piece to meet luxury specifications (bags, jackets, collars, trims)
  • Versatility for luxury applications: Because of its size (typical hides around 6-8 sq. ft for many Merino hides) and refined finish, Merino shearling is ideal for accessories, linings, outerwear panels, trims and distinct design features—not just bulk industrial use
  • Durability and performance: While softer than heavy shearling, high-grade Merino shearling still delivers robust performance: loft for warmth, natural breathability (from the wool), and leather backing for longevity
