Perlinger Fjord is a shrunken calf leather with a medium temper and distinctive pebbled surface. Its texture comes from a shrinking process that draws out the calfskin’s natural grain, rather than stamping a pattern onto it. The grain varies across each hide, so every piece has its own character. It’s prized for combining that rich pebbled grain and good durability/resistance to everyday wear and tear.
The leather is made by Ludwig Perlinger, a family tannery in Bavaria, Germany, founded in 1864 and known for specializing in calf leather. Perlinger says its tanning process takes about 150 hours, with traditional hand-finishing steps that contribute to the leather’s feel and durability.
The hides come from calf in the alp regions of Europe where there are less bugs and are hand selected for the highest quality. These hides are sourced specifically for their density, ensuring a distinct deep grain in the shrinking process. One hide can lose up to 40% of its size in the shrunken tanning process. The final result is one of the highest end luxury leather articles available. A deep grain that can not be imitated. Running down the center of the back, Fjord will highlight its signature perpendicular veining. This veining will usually be centered on the highest end luxury handbags.
Please note being natural grain you will have different pebbling sizes across the hide. If you want to make larger items you will likely want to order whole hide to maximum flexibility in cutting.

70%+ This leather is best suited for those who appreciate the natural character and variation that comes with a genuine hide. As a natural material, leather may include wrinkles, veins, scars, bites, loose grain, and other markings that make each hide unique. Because this is full aniline leather with minimal surface finishing, those natural characteristics remain visible and authentic. Some areas of the hide may be better suited for small to medium goods, and ordering a full hide is recommended if you need larger uninterrupted panels. Darker colors can help minimize visible variation, and thoughtful cutting allows you to work around or incorporate these natural features into your projects. |
