"This leather is a pure joy in many ways: the look, the feel and the handling. Very luxurious and it will age beautifully." - David V.
Leather splitting is a custom service available down to your preferred thickness
Please note split leather can't be returned
There is a tolerance to leather splitting. While we have invested a lot of time and training into hitting a tighter tolerance range than advertised, sometimes the leather articles and differing densities require the full tolerance range.
Leather tolerance is denoted by +/- which means the leather can be both above and below that number by the denoted amount.
How we gauge the leather is with a thickness gauge that can reach both the edges and middle of the hide. We apply a moderate amount of pressure (Not too hard and not too soft)
Again our tolerances are tighter than the tanneries. We are usually well inside the range, especially on panels, but occasionally need the full range. Tolerance ranges are as follows:
Splitting Panels: +/- (0.1mm).
Splitting Full Hides & Half Hides: +/- 0.15mm
No Splitting (From Tannery Splitter): +/- 0.2mm
WARNING: This leather is a very unique article and not recommended for beginning leather workers. It is an article used by the luxury brands and will show all its natural characteristics like fat wrinkles, blemishes, discoloration, scratches, etc. Luxury brands understand the yield is lower on this article in exchange for its really special touch. Darker colors may hide the natural characteristics a little bit. The Gold color is the most challenging. Because of this, we do not offer returns or refunds on this article. Please contact us before ordering if you have any questions.
Novonappa is probably the most sought after leather in the Haas portfolio. This article was made famous by one of the top luxury brands. The Novonappa we get is is their top grade in production. We at times can get lower grades if you need at a better price, but this listing is for the highest grade.
Novonappa is Vegetable re-tanned and full aniline to give it its structure and that beaufiul buttery touch and finish. It has a nice balance of supple and firm and is great for many different leather projects. The calf has a magic to healing scratches and creates one of the most beautiful patinas over time. The flesh side is finished nicely for showing it off naturally or adding a liner to it.
While Novonappa is extremely beautiful in its patina, it is important to know that this leather is very naked and does not hide any of the defects associated with a natural leather. Some of the defects you will see on the hide are neck wrinkles, sometimes bites, scars and they can be located anywhere on the hide. Due to this, we recommend the leather being used for small leather goods so you can cut around them. Even the absolute highest grade that luxury brands receive they often will only use a small percentage of the hide. If you are looking for a similar type of leather with some of these defects being covered, the Baranil by Degermann is a semi aniline version and tends to hide these defects better. Again, Novonappa is such a special article but it is important to be aware of its full aniline nature. Here is a link to more info on full aniline leathers and our policy.

70%+ Best for those that like the rustic flaws and characteristics of horsehide. With a natural product like leather, there can be areas with neck and back wrinkles, spidering, veins, scars, bites, loose grain. This article especially rustic and for those who appreciate the uniqueness of horsehide. Horses are much more active than cows and their hides are more representative of flaws. These flaws make each hide unique. We recommend this article for those that appreciate the rich dense grain that is full of character. If you require large pieces, we recommend whenever possible ordering a full hide. This leather can have holes in the center of the skin and are best for small to medium sized leather goods. This leather being full aniline (meaning the leather is very natural with no extra finishing on the surface to hide any flaws) darker colors will better hide any areas of concern. A key skill of using full aniline leather is the ability to work less desirable areas of the hide into the less visible areas of your projects. |
